Canada, Alberta Oil Sands

Local communities have seen the production of oil increase dramatically in the Oil Sands, one of the largest sources of unconventional oil in the world.

Overview

Canada, Alberta Oil Sands

The Alberta oil sands in western Canada, a large oil mining region, are in the homeland of the Dene, Cree, and Metis People in Treaty 8 territory. Visible from space, the oil sands have made irrevocable environmental damage, by straining riverbeds, creating vast toxic chemical pools, and polluting the air. The oil sand also have deep impacts on the Indigenous communities living there, including their disconnection from their land, waterways, language, and traditional ways of life.
